First Blue Marlin of the season!
This year took longer than last year, but finally today we caught the 1st blue marlin of the season. It was almost three o'clock and we were approaching the harbour of Puerto del Carmen when all of a sudden one of the 80lb reels began screaming. We soon realised it was a Blue Marlin, not only had we heard on the radio of another boat fighting with one half an hour before, but within seconds we could see the marlin's furiously swimming over and beneath the surface. It must have been almost 800 metres away until we could begin to reel in, taking turns between some of the fishers as it was a very tiring effort, with the fish being so far. After nearly an hour we had it next to the boat, but the marlin was exhausted, and even though we tried to recover it for about 20 minutes, we had no luck and it died. A shame really, as it barely weighted 200 kilos.
Earlier on we had caught a couple of white trevally (one and three kilo), a four kilo barracuda and a beautiful filefish. Not much, but the strong winds we've been having recently are not helping much.
